Naval and Maritime Operations

By subject

Occupations in this career field focus on the safe operation of marine vessels or watercraft, such as ships and submarines, in executing military missions.

The military has the most technically and tactically advanced defense and war-fighting capabilities to uphold national security at, and under, the sea with its vast fleet of aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, dock landing ships, cutters, other surface vessels, and submarines. Surface vessels may be used to transport aircraft and troops, aid in amphibious troop landings, conduct harbor patrols, or track down drug smugglers. Submarines patrol the world’s oceans monitoring enemy hostile actions, intercepting electronic communications, and gathering intelligence information and are heavily relied upon for antisubmarine warfare, antisurface warfare, land attack, strategic deterrence, and landing Special Warfare forces. Submariners have many responsibilities including the safe operation of the nuclear reactor; maintaining the ship’s torpedoes, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and sonar; charting the ship’s position; and operating communications and intelligence equipment.
