Fork Union Military Academy

Fork Union Military Academy For over a century, young men have found the route to college taking them first to a preparatory school in a small town in the countryside of Central Virginia. The town is Fork Union, near historic Charlottesville. The school is Fork Union Military Academy.

The young men come from near and far and from all stations in life. They are a wide range of races, religions, talents and abilities. What they have in common is the desire to go to college one day, and parents and relatives who want them to have the education it takes to get there.

Our Mission
The mission of Fork Union Military Academy is to provide young men a college preparatory education in a residential, Christian environment. Using the best aspects of the military system, the Academy teaches its cadets responsibility, leadership, discipline, and pride by providing an atmosphere in which spiritual, mental, and physical growth can flourish.

Today, Fork Union Military Academy students find what young men have been seeking here since 1898: a challenging educational experience in a safe, structured environment where distractions are few and where every aspect of student life encourages academic achievements and personal growth.

A young man can undergo a profound transformation when he becomes a FUMA cadet. His study habits improve. His grades improve. He begins to see others - friends, family, even himself - in a new light. Inevitably, he begins to hold higher expectations of himself. He sets goals. And he begins striving towards them earnestly and with purpose.

Positive peer pressure both within and outside the classroom plays a large role in this process. So, too, does a caring, attentive faculty who serve not just as instructors and coaches, but as role models for young men fast approaching adulthood. Both of these attributes are hallmarks of the FUMA system that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit of young men.

Here young men get an education in the classroom to rival that of any secondary school nationwide. Yet they get much more. They learn about themselves, about teamwork, about striving toward common goals, about perseverence, self-discipline, and responsibility - all traits necessary to a successful future and to personal fulfillment.

While not all young men arrive at FUMA fully aware of their needs, or of their own potential, they all come away from their experiences in the Cadet Corps knowing that they have grown up a bit, perhaps a lot. They leave knowing they are better prepared for the demands of higher education and for whatever challenges the future might bring.

In addition to leading worship services and teaching, the FUMA Chaplain is available for one-on-one counseling with cadets and their families. The Chaplain's open-door policy makes him available to cadets at virtually any time to offer them spiritual guidance, answer their questions, or help them find solutions to their personal problems.

Cadets participate in a variety of service projects to the benefit of the Academy and the surrounding community. These include, for example, fundraising for charities and visits to the community nursing home.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (affiliated with state and national FCA organizations) and the Fellowship of Christian Cadets offer weekly devotional time and a chance to share the excitement of a growing faith.

The Academy is affiliated with and receives financial support from the Baptist General Association of Virginia. In addition, certain members of the Academy's Board of Trustees are appointed by the Baptist General Association of Virginia.

Broadly, our religious program promotes spiritual growth and moral development while offering young men guidance in ethical decision-making consistent with Christian principles. It is the strength of this spiritual element of the Academy's mission that often has the greatest and most lasting impact on young men's lives.
