Fishburne Military School

Fishburne Military School is a private all boys boarding school for grades 8 through 12. Our small class sizes and structured learning environment have proven successful in preparing students for college and the adult world.

Fishburne overlooks the city of Waynesboro in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains serve as an enduring reminder of the natural setting and the surrounding area's rich heritage.

Fishburne Military School's success through the years has emerged principally because a young man's competition here is measured by what he has done, and by what he is capable of achieving, rather than between students. FMS urges each student to strive for his individual potential, and secure a degree of excellence in pursuit of that goal.

Fishburne has been continuously accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1897 (SACS). Additionally, Fishburne is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and is a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.

The principle objective of the Fishburne experience is academic development that encourages students' advancement to college. Life at Fishburne indeed revolves around the academic program. This scaffold for success is carefully constructed utilizing our three-tiered study hall program, afternoon Help Classes, direct and regular interaction with academic advisors as well as individualized attention provided by experienced educators in a small classroom environment.

Fishburne approaches the teaching of Learning Skills as an integral part of the Academic Program. A student, we have found, learns and applies "learning techniques and strategies" more readily if he sees an immediate and useful application for theses skills. To accomplish this objective, Learning Skills are taught within the context of regular classes.

Fishburne Military School is dedicated to providing each Cadet with a sound academic foundation. The school achieves this mission through the purposeful work of teachers and administrators who focus their skill and caring on shaping the Cadet of today into a capable, responsible leader of tomorrow, while maintaining a 'family friendly' environment.

Faculty members are carefully chosen not just for their academic credentials but also for the life experience they contribute while they work with our young men. Academic classes that range in size from five to twelve students, individual attention from instructors and required participation by each Cadet are the keys to their achievement. Also vital to student success is an evening study period. Faculty officers who supervise the evening study are the same individuals who teach the Cadets during the day; thus instruction does not end with classes, but carries over to the homework period. In addition, Fishburne instructors remain in their classrooms during help class (a 40-minute period held four times each week).

While the Cadet may choose to attend the extra help session at any time, he will be required to attend the help period for any class in which he is experiencing difficulty. Each Cadet is assigned a faculty advisor. The advisor, who has contact with the student daily, either in the classroom or during athletic activities, is responsible for helping the Cadet with academic and social problems, or referring the Cadet to the proper source for help.

Fishburne Military School is fortunate to have a highly qualified and dedicated Faculty. The Faculty bring to the school a variety of experience, educational and non-educational. There are members who have been educators their entire careers, those who have had a distinguished career in the military, and those who have been employed in private industry. This mix ensures the cadets at Fishburne are exposed to people with varied life experiences and perspectives. Moreover, Faculty at Fishburne utilize a diversity of teaching techniques and styles, working hard to individualize instruction for their students.
