Virginia Military Institute

The Virginia Military Institute believes that the measure of a college lies in the quality and performance of its graduates and their contributions to society. VMI provides many opportunities for cadets to prepare for their roles in American society. These opportunities occur within the unique and challenging VMI system of academic preparation, military discipline and physical fitness.

Cadet life at VMI is defined by the time that cadets spend in class during the academic day, times when cadets meet military and athletic obligations, and times when they may choose to participate in developmental activities like career or personal counseling, academic advising and improvement of learning skills, clubs and organizations, volunteer work and others.

The VMI experience is a unique and demanding blend of challenges designed to fully test and expand the capabilities of each cadet. VMI combines the studies of a comprehensive college curriculum within a framework of military discipline and physical development that emphasizes honor, integrity and responsibility. Each cadet is encouraged to reach beyond existing, often self-imposed limits in academic, military and athletic activities to fully prepare themselves for the requirements of civilian or military life. The hallmark of the VMI experience is the individual attention, born of a low student to faculty ratio and close-knit barracks life, given to each cadet's progress in every endeavor. From this experience the cadet graduates from VMI well-equipped to handle the rigors of adult life in the Twenty-first Century.

The military system characterizes and distinguishes life at VMI. It fosters punctuality, order, discipline, courtesy, and respect for authority. By placing all cadets on a uniform plane, it enables them to advance through self-reliance, initiative, and strength of character. Cadets live within a military framework; they wear the cadet uniform, live in barracks, and eat their meals in a mess hall. The typical day is strictly regimented and requires close attention to detail to manage the available time to ensure necessary academic, military, and physical training requirements are properly completed. Specific military training is provided both from within the cadet regiment, commanded and administered largely by cadets, and by the various armed services through the Reserve Officer Training Corps detachments located at VMI.
